Taking the Plunge

Filed under: Mommy Greenest, Mommy Life, Random Mommy Musings — The Mommy @ 11:18 am

Okay, so we’re taking the plunge into the world of cloth diapering.  I’ve tried it out with the one diaper I bought on ebay and so far the experience has been mostly positive.  That may seem like a bizarre way to try it out but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something that wouldn’t end up working out for us.  But it looks like it will work for us and I have bought some cloth pocket diapers and hemp inserts.  We’re just waiting for them to arrive.

You may be wondering what the “mostly” in the “mostly positive” experience is and I will tell you, it was quite a surprise.  The first time I had to change a poopy cloth diaper I remembered the instructions to “deposit the solids in the toilet” and put the diaper in the diaper pail for further cleaning later.  Well, I wasn’t really paying that much attention and did not fully realize the physics of dropping poo from higher than “normal” into the toilet when I hear a “splash” and look down to see toilet water on my pants.  Huh. It’s perfect common sense that the “splash factor” would come into play but I just wasn’t thinking.

One issue that I see that may come up is the “heinous poo” that happens every once in a while.  You know the ones…sticky and goopy and not looking (or acting) at all like the “solids” they admonish you to dispose of in the toilet.  I may succumb to the “gross out” factor when that happens but, on the whole, I think it will be a pretty easy transition.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go find my Birkenstocks…
