Taking the Plunge

Filed under: Mommy Greenest, Mommy Life, Random Mommy Musings — The Mommy @ 11:18 am

Okay, so we’re taking the plunge into the world of cloth diapering.  I’ve tried it out with the one diaper I bought on ebay and so far the experience has been mostly positive.  That may seem like a bizarre way to try it out but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something that wouldn’t end up working out for us.  But it looks like it will work for us and I have bought some cloth pocket diapers and hemp inserts.  We’re just waiting for them to arrive.

You may be wondering what the “mostly” in the “mostly positive” experience is and I will tell you, it was quite a surprise.  The first time I had to change a poopy cloth diaper I remembered the instructions to “deposit the solids in the toilet” and put the diaper in the diaper pail for further cleaning later.  Well, I wasn’t really paying that much attention and did not fully realize the physics of dropping poo from higher than “normal” into the toilet when I hear a “splash” and look down to see toilet water on my pants.  Huh. It’s perfect common sense that the “splash factor” would come into play but I just wasn’t thinking.

One issue that I see that may come up is the “heinous poo” that happens every once in a while.  You know the ones…sticky and goopy and not looking (or acting) at all like the “solids” they admonish you to dispose of in the toilet.  I may succumb to the “gross out” factor when that happens but, on the whole, I think it will be a pretty easy transition.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go find my Birkenstocks…

Reusable Baby Wipes

Filed under: Mommy Greenest, Mommy Tips, Money Saving — The Mommy @ 9:08 pm

While I’ve been on the “carcinogens in personal care products” kick the past couple of weeks, I checked out the contents of Princess Tater Tots baby wipes and decided that I was going to use reusable baby wipes.  Instead of spend money on them, I decided to make some out of old flannel receiving blankets that we’re not using any more.  So here’s how you do it:

Cut recieving blankets into 9 inch squares (or really whatever size you’d like…I just found that 9 inch squares gave me a big enough wipe without it being too big).  If you have a serge function on your machine (I don’t), you could just leave them “one-ply” and serge the edges. Or you could make them “two-ply” by putting them wrong sides together and serging them.  Since I don’t have that, here’s what I did to make them two-ply: 1) put two pieces material right sides together, 2) sew 3 1/2 sides together (leave large enough opening on the last side to flip the square right side out), 3) flip square right side out, 4) tuck open edges under (this can be a teeny bit tricky but I got the hang of it pretty quick), 5) top stitch all the way around the square.  Voila!  Wet them and stick them in the wipe warmer and your tot has a toasty, comfy baby wipe for their bottom!  And it’s not like they have to look perfect…they’re only wiping butts!

P.S.  I am THE LAST person I ever thought would be using reusable baby wipes and I DO have a stash of disposable wipes in case there is a completely heinous poo incident that I’m averse to using reusables for.  But, on the whole, it’s a pretty easy deal!

Scared Natural

Filed under: Mommy Greenest, Mommy Life, Mommy Style, Mommy Tips, Random Mommy Musings — The Mommy @ 8:48 pm

So I heard this report on National Public Radio the other day in passing on the way home from somewhere and it got me thinking and looking into the known carcinogens that are in every day cosmetics.  It’s scary!  And the FDA doesn’t regulate this stuff.  Nobody does.  Apparently there’s an industry committee that looks into some ingredients but there are many, many ingredients that aren’t tested and the effects of them are unknown on humans.  Or they’re known carcinogens that the industry has said are not harmful if absorbed through the skin.  It has since been found that they can be many times more harmful if absorbed through the skin.  The ones that caught my eye in particular are the “parabens” (methylparaben, propylparaben and others…anything with a “paraben” after it!) that act like estrogen in your body, increasing the growth of abnormal cells and, in particular, cancer cells.  Parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors and apparently the fatty tissue in breasts hangs on to it pretty good!  Parabens are also endocrine disruptors and, since I am hypothyroid, I don’t need any extra endocrine disruption, thank you very much!  Parabens are in shampoos, lotions, eye cream, foundation, eye shadow, facial powder.  Basically everything that I use!  So, I’m tossin’ everything out and finding new products without parabens.  And there are lots more chemicals that are harmful in our cosmetics…I just don’t have the energy to list them here!  Hey, maybe if I didn’t use products with those harmful chemicals in them, I’d have the energy!  Ha!  Here is a link , although it’s a couple of years old, it is pretty thorough and I used it as a starting point to learn about the different chemicals in cosmetics and some “alternative” companies that don’t use them.  It’s enough to make me want to go without makeup.  But that would be scary for everybody so I won’t subject y’all to that!  As it turns out, this is NOT the way to save money.  Apparently, it’s cheaper to put carcinogens on you!

It also got me thinking about the chemicals that Princess Tater Tot comes in contact with so I bought some different soap/shampoo and lotion for her but I haven’t decided what to do about wipes and diapers.  It’s just so hard to give up the convenience of disposables.  But, if the critics are to be believed, it’s pretty important to use reusable diapers and wipes not just for the environmental aspect but also for the health of your child.  I don’t want to be alarmist and reactionary but I worry that The Tater Tot is at risk for problems that we won’t see until later in life because of long-term exposure now.  So, my plan (at least for today) is to come up with ways to minimize the risk while not increasing the drama/inconvenience factor too much.  Things like start using washable cloth wipes for urine only diapers, trying cloth during the day but using one disposable for night time…things like that to decrease her exposure and to see if I can handle it!  I just don’t want it to feel like a villain if I can’t go all-natural all-the-time. But at the same time, my main concern is that my daughter is healthy.  So, I’ll do the best that I can.  What more can a Mommy do?
